Acute Olecranon Bursitis: Caring for a Swollen Elbow

How the structures involved in Olecranon Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Acute olecranon bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled sac over the elbow tip, causing a soft swelling that may be painful, warm, or red.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
The bursa directly over the bony point of the elbow
Avoid
Leaning on, squeezing, or self-draining the swelling
Infection clues
Increasing warmth, redness, pain, drainage, fever, or feeling unwell

What to know first

Repeated pressure, a direct knock, crystal inflammation, and infection can all produce this pattern. Redness, warmth, broken skin, drainage, fever, or feeling unwell raises concern for infection and changes how urgently it should be assessed.

Why a pocket of swelling forms

The olecranon bursa normally allows skin to glide over the bony point of the elbow. Irritation makes the lining release extra fluid, creating a noticeable pouch. Non-infected bursitis may be only mildly tender and often leaves elbow bending fairly well preserved. An infected bursa more often presents with increasing pain, warmth, redness, tenderness, and sometimes fever, although symptoms vary.

A clinician examines the skin, swelling, joint movement, and the arm beyond the elbow. When infection or crystals are suspected, fluid may be removed with a needle for testing. Aspiration is not automatically necessary for every uncomplicated swelling.

Reduce pressure and protect the skin

Avoid leaning on the elbow and use soft padding during necessary desk or work tasks. A wrapped cold pack can ease soreness; keep a cloth layer against the skin. Preserve comfortable elbow movement unless a clinician advises otherwise, but pause activities that repeatedly strike or compress the swollen area. Do not puncture, squeeze, or attempt to drain the bursa yourself.

Medication choice depends on your health conditions and current medicines, so check with a pharmacist or clinician before using an anti-inflammatory. If infection is identified, treatment may include antibiotics and drainage. Persistent or repeatedly troublesome bursitis sometimes needs specialist review, while surgery is reserved for selected cases.

When elbow swelling is urgent

Arrange same-day care for spreading redness, increasing warmth or pain, pus or fluid leaking through the skin, fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent assessment after a significant injury if the elbow looks deformed, movement is severely restricted, or the hand becomes numb, weak, pale, blue, or cold. People with reduced immunity or poorly controlled diabetes should seek early advice for warm, red swelling.

What to clarify with your clinician

Ask whether the pattern suggests infection, trauma, or crystal inflammation; whether fluid testing would affect treatment; how to pad the elbow for your work; and when full activity can resume. If swelling has returned before, discuss the pressure or movement triggers and whether specialist assessment is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can I drain olecranon bursitis at home?

No. Puncturing the swelling can introduce infection and may injure nearby tissue. When drainage is appropriate, a clinician can use sterile technique and decide whether the fluid needs testing.

Can olecranon bursitis move the elbow joint?

The swelling sits outside the joint, so bending may remain possible, though a large or painful bursa can get in the way. Severe restriction, deformity, or pain throughout joint movement calls for assessment of other causes.

Does every swollen elbow need antibiotics?

Antibiotics treat bacterial infection, not simple pressure-related inflammation. A clinician looks for skin changes, warmth, tenderness, systemic symptoms, and sometimes fluid findings before choosing treatment.
