What should you know about acute folliculitis?

Short answer
Acute folliculitis is sudden inflammation around hair follicles, producing tender or itchy bumps that may contain pus.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Appearance
- Small bumps or pustules centred on hairs
- Common triggers
- Shaving, friction, sweat, occlusion, or microorganisms
- Avoid
- Squeezing spots or sharing towels and razors
The short answer
It may follow bacterial or yeast overgrowth, shaving, friction, sweating, occlusive clothing, or exposure to contaminated water. Mild local episodes can settle with gentle care, but spreading, deep, or recurrent disease needs clinical evaluation.
What the bumps represent
Each spot is centred on a hair follicle and may look like a small red bump, a white-tipped pustule, or a crusted sore. Crops can appear on the beard area, scalp, chest, back, buttocks, thighs, or other hair-bearing skin. Itching, stinging, or tenderness varies with the cause and depth.
Ingrown hairs can closely resemble folliculitis, especially after shaving or hair removal. Acne is another possible look-alike, but its lesions are not always centred on hairs. A clinician may take a swab when infection is recurrent, unusual, or unresponsive to initial treatment.
Ways to reduce irritation
Stop shaving or waxing the affected skin until it settles. Wash gently, use a clean towel, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid tight garments or oily products that trap heat. A warm compress can ease discomfort and encourage superficial spots to drain without squeezing.
Do not share razors, towels, or sports equipment that touches bare skin. Prescription topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics may be suitable when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, while other causes require different medicines. Unnecessary antibiotic use can delay the correct diagnosis.
When to seek medical help
Arrange prompt care if redness spreads beyond the follicles, pain intensifies, a large tender lump develops, drainage is extensive, or fever and chills occur. Facial swelling, rapidly worsening illness, or redness approaching an eye requires urgent assessment.
Book a routine review if outbreaks recur, leave scars or dark marks, involve a wide area, or do not improve with gentle measures. Mention recent hot-tub use, hair removal, new medicines, workplace exposure, and any health issue that may weaken immune defence.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the lesions fit bacterial, fungal, irritant, or ingrown-hair folliculitis; whether a swab is needed; and which cleansing or shaving changes make sense. If medicine is prescribed, confirm its application area, course, likely side effects, and what worsening should prompt reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can I shave over folliculitis?
Shaving can reopen inflamed follicles and spread irritation. Pause until the skin settles, then use clean equipment, a gentle technique, and avoid repeated passes over the same area.
Is every folliculitis outbreak bacterial?
No. Yeast, friction, blocked follicles, medicines, and other inflammatory processes can create a similar pattern. This is why persistent or recurrent cases may need examination or testing.
Should I pop folliculitis bumps?
No. Squeezing can push inflammation deeper, damage surrounding skin, and increase marking. Use a warm compress and seek care for deep, painful, or enlarging lesions.
