Short answer

Acute dyspnoea means breathlessness that starts suddenly or worsens quickly and may require urgent assessment to identify its cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Meaning
Dyspnoea is the medical term for a sensation of difficult or uncomfortable breathing.
First response
Stop exertion, sit upright, and assess for emergency warning signs.
Do not assume
Anxiety can alter breathing, but new acute breathlessness still needs a physical cause considered.

The short answer

The feeling may include air hunger, tight breathing, unusually rapid breaths, or difficulty speaking while breathing. Because causes range from an airway flare to heart or circulation problems, severity and accompanying warning signs guide how quickly care is needed.

What may be happening

Breathlessness develops when the body senses that breathing effort or oxygen delivery is inadequate. Asthma can present with sudden breathlessness, wheeze, and chest tightness. Anaphylaxis may present with breathing difficulty alongside swelling, hives, dizziness, or vomiting. Angina can present with breathlessness as well as chest discomfort.

Other possibilities include a chest infection, a blood clot in the lung, a collapsed lung, fluid around or within the lungs, an abnormal heart rhythm, or anaemia. The pattern, examination, medical history, and tests are needed to distinguish them; the sensation alone does not establish the cause.

Immediate practical steps

Pause activity, sit upright, loosen restrictive clothing, and move away from smoke or fumes. If you have an agreed asthma action plan, follow its instructions and use your reliever inhaler as prescribed. If a clinician prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector for anaphylaxis and the relevant symptoms occur, use it as trained and call emergency services.

Do not breathe into a paper bag or assume anxiety is the explanation for new symptoms. A medical assessment may include oxygen measurement, heart tracing, chest examination, blood tests, and chest imaging, selected according to the presentation.

Warning signs that need urgent help

Call emergency services if breathlessness is severe, began abruptly, prevents full sentences, or occurs with blue-grey lips, fainting, confusion, crushing chest discomfort, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling, facial or tongue swelling, or a silent chest during an asthma attack.

Arrange same-day assessment for unexplained new breathlessness, a clear deterioration from your usual breathing, fever with breathing difficulty, or symptoms that recur with modest activity. Stay with a breathless person while help is coming and keep prescribed rescue medicines nearby.

Useful questions at the appointment

Describe exactly when the breathing changed, what you were doing, and whether there was pain, wheeze, fever, swelling, palpitations, recent immobility, or a new exposure. Ask which cause is suspected, what tests are needed, how to use any inhaler correctly, and which recurrence signs should trigger emergency care.

Questions people ask

Can oxygen level be normal while I feel breathless?

Yes. Breathlessness reflects breathing effort and the body's perception as well as oxygen level. A normal home reading does not rule out a significant airway, heart, circulation, or metabolic problem.

Should I lie down when suddenly short of breath?

Sitting upright is often more comfortable and can make breathing easier. If you feel faint, avoid standing or walking alone and call for help; the safest position may depend on the cause and your level of alertness.
