What should you know about acute depression?

Short answer
Acute depression usually describes depressive symptoms that begin suddenly, worsen quickly, or become severe enough to disrupt daily life and require prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What acute depression means
“Acute depression” is not usually a separate diagnosis. Clinicians may use the phrase informally for a current depressive episode or a marked deterioration in someone who already has depression. Features can include persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, fatigue, poor concentration, changes in sleep or appetite, irritability, and withdrawing from other people. A clinician will also check for medicines, substance use, thyroid problems, anaemia, infection, grief, and other conditions that can resemble or intensify depression.
Some people experience anxiety alongside depression. Others notice agitation, slowed thinking, difficulty managing personal care, or an inability to work or study. The pattern, severity, effect on functioning, and any history of unusually elevated mood help guide diagnosis and treatment.
What to do now
Arrange a prompt appointment with a GP or mental health professional, especially if symptoms are worsening or interfering with eating, sleeping, hygiene, work, study, or caring responsibilities. Tell a trusted person what is happening and ask them to help with appointments, meals, medicines, or company. Keep the day simple: take prescribed medicines as directed, avoid alcohol and recreational drugs, eat regularly, and aim for a steady sleep and wake routine.
Treatment depends on severity and personal circumstances. It may involve talking therapy, an antidepressant, closer follow-up, practical support, or a combination. Do not stop an antidepressant suddenly unless a prescribing clinician gives you a plan, because withdrawal symptoms and worsening mood can occur.
When to seek urgent care
Get immediate help if you may harm yourself or someone else, have made a suicide plan, cannot keep yourself safe, hear voices telling you to act, are severely confused, or are no longer eating, drinking, or managing basic care. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. If possible, stay with a trusted person, move away from medicines, weapons, or other means of harm, and do not drive yourself.
Urgent assessment is also needed when depression follows childbirth and includes frightening thoughts, severe agitation, confusion, or unusual beliefs. A sudden switch to very little sleep with racing thoughts, impulsive behaviour, or unusually high energy also needs rapid clinical review because it may point to a manic or mixed episode.
Questions for your clinician
Ask what diagnosis fits your symptoms, whether a physical condition or medicine could be contributing, and which treatment options suit their severity. Discuss what to do if your mood worsens, when follow-up should occur, expected medicine effects, possible side effects, and whom to contact outside clinic hours. Mention any previous periods of unusually high energy, reduced need for sleep, hallucinations, self-harm, or difficult reactions to treatment.

Questions people ask
Is acute depression different from major depressive disorder?
Acute depression is often an informal description of how suddenly or severely symptoms are affecting someone. Major depressive disorder is a clinical diagnosis based on a defined pattern of symptoms, their duration, and their impact.
Can acute depression improve without medication?
Some episodes may improve with psychological therapy, practical support, sleep and activity changes, or treatment of a contributing problem. Medication may be recommended when symptoms are more severe, persistent, recurrent, or significantly impair daily life.
How can I support someone with severe depressive symptoms?
Listen without arguing with their feelings, help them access professional care, offer specific practical help, and take any talk of suicide or self-harm seriously. If they cannot stay safe, remain with them when safe for you and seek emergency help.
