Acupressure for trigger finger: what to know

Short answer
Acupressure may briefly ease hand tension, but no single pressure point corrects the tendon catching that causes trigger finger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main limitation
- Acupressure does not correct restricted tendon gliding.
- Stop if
- Pressure increases pain, swelling or catching.
- Clinical check
- Persistent locking or loss of hand function deserves assessment.
Can an acupressure point treat trigger finger?
Trigger finger develops when a flexor tendon does not glide smoothly through its sheath. Pressure on the palm cannot reliably widen that passage or release a finger that is mechanically locked.
Why the finger catches
A tender bump may be felt in the palm near the base of the affected finger or thumb. Bending can produce clicking, catching or a need to straighten the digit with the other hand. Symptoms may feel stiffer after rest.
These features reflect restricted tendon movement rather than a blocked energy point. Forceful rubbing over a sore tendon can aggravate local irritation, so discomfort is a signal to stop.
A safer self-care approach
If you want to try acupressure for comfort, use light, steady pressure on the fleshy muscles of the hand and forearm rather than pressing hard on the painful nodule. Keep the finger relaxed, stop if catching or pain increases, and avoid trying to force a locked joint straight.
Reduce repeated gripping for a while and note which activities trigger locking. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss options such as activity changes, splinting, injection or release when appropriate.
When assessment matters
Arrange an appointment if catching persists, daily tasks are becoming difficult, or the finger repeatedly locks. Seek prompt care after an injury, or if the finger is stuck, unusually pale or blue, numb, markedly swollen, hot, or accompanied by spreading redness or fever.
Useful questions at your visit
Ask whether the examination fits trigger finger, which gripping activities to modify, whether a night splint suits the affected digit, and what changes would make injection or surgical release reasonable to consider.

Questions people ask
Where should I press for trigger finger?
There is no established point that releases the narrowed tendon passage. If gentle pressure feels soothing, keep it on comfortable soft tissue and avoid force directly over a painful lump.
Can I pull a locked finger straight?
Do not force it. Gentle movement within a comfortable range is reasonable, but a finger that remains locked or develops altered colour, numbness or severe swelling needs prompt care.
