Actinic keratosis in German: terms and patient guidance

You may also encounter solare Keratose, which means solar keratosis. Both terms refer to abnormal surface skin cells linked to accumulated ultraviolet exposure, rather than to a cosmetic skin texture alone.

German notes may describe a rau or schuppig area, meaning rough or scaly, on sonnenexponierte Haut, meaning sun-exposed skin. A document that uses Hautkrebsvorstufe is describing a precancerous skin change; this wording does not say that invasive cancer is already present.

Actinic keratoses can be skin-coloured, pink, red, brown or grey and may be easier to detect by touch. They often occur on the face, bald scalp, ears, forearms or backs of the hands. A dermatologist distinguishes them from harmless rough spots and from squamous cell carcinoma by examination, with a biopsy when needed.

If the term appears in a German report, confirm which body site it refers to and whether the clinician recommends observation, treatment or a tissue sample. Bring the full report to your appointment because nearby wording may explain the diagnosis and plan.

Management may target a single lesion with cryotherapy or address a wider sun-damaged area with a prescription medicine or photodynamic therapy. The choice reflects the lesion's location and thickness, the amount of affected skin and your health. Do not apply leftover creams, acids or home freezing products to the area.

Use shade, protective clothing, a brimmed hat and broad-spectrum sunscreen to reduce further ultraviolet damage. Continue checking nearby skin for new rough, tender or changing patches.

Contact a dermatologist promptly if the patch rapidly enlarges, thickens, becomes persistently painful, bleeds without clear injury or turns into a sore that does not heal. These features call for assessment because actinic keratosis can sometimes progress to squamous cell carcinoma.

After treatment, obtain timely advice for worsening swelling, spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever. A spot that remains, returns or changes after therapy should also be re-examined rather than repeatedly treated at home.

Ask: Is this diagnosis definite? Is a Gewebeprobe, or biopsy, needed? Does the proposed treatment address only this lesion or the surrounding sun-damaged field? What reaction and wound care should I expect? When should the site and the rest of my skin be reviewed?
