Actinic Folliculitis Treatment and Prevention

This uncommon eruption produces inflamed, follicle-centred bumps after substantial sun exposure, often on areas such as the face, neck, chest, shoulders, or arms. Because acne, bacterial folliculitis, yeast-related folliculitis, and other light-sensitive eruptions can resemble it, confirming the pattern comes before choosing medication.

A clinician considers the timing after sunlight, the distribution on exposed skin, whether each bump surrounds a hair follicle, recent medicines or products, and any recurrence pattern. A swab, scraping, or other test may be used when infection or another follicular disorder remains possible.

Antibiotics are not automatically needed: they treat susceptible bacteria, not every cause of follicular inflammation. Treatment may instead focus on calming inflammation, reducing follicular blockage, or addressing another diagnosis identified during examination.

Move out of strong sun, cover affected areas with breathable clothing, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that suits acne-prone skin. Keep the area cool, shower after sweating, and avoid tight or oily products that trap heat around follicles.

Do not squeeze the bumps or share towels and razors. Use only the medicine prescribed for the suspected cause and complete the instructed course. If outbreaks follow a predictable sunny season, discuss a prevention plan before exposure increases.

Arrange an assessment when bumps are widespread, keep returning, are painful, drain pus, or do not settle after avoiding sun and irritants. Prompt care is warranted for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, red streaking, or feeling systemically unwell, because those features can accompany a significant infection.

Seek urgent help for blistering or peeling over a large area, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe eruption that began after a new medicine.
