Acoustic subcision for depressed acne scars

The aim is to let a tethered scar sit more level with the surrounding skin. Suitability depends on scar shape and depth, skin condition, device characteristics and the practitioner's assessment; the name can also be used differently between clinics, so confirm exactly what procedure is being offered.

Conventional subcision places an instrument under the scar to release fibrous bands mechanically. An acoustic approach delivers energy through the skin with the intention of disrupting selected tethers. Neither approach corrects every scar type: narrow deep pits, broad shallow depressions and raised scars respond differently and may call for separate techniques.

A consultation should include examination under angled lighting, discussion of previous acne treatment and confirmation that active breakouts are controlled. Ask whether acoustic subcision is the device's formal indication, what endpoint the practitioner expects, and how it fits with resurfacing or other scar procedures.

Choose a clinician experienced in identifying acne-scar subtypes and ask to see the specific device and treatment plan. Disclose medicines, bleeding problems, tendency toward raised scars, recent procedures, active infection and pregnancy. Clarify expected discomfort, bruising, swelling, pigment change, aftercare and whether several modalities are proposed.

After treatment, follow the clinic's cleansing and skin-care instructions, protect the area from sun exposure and avoid manipulating tender or swollen skin. Judge change with photographs taken in the same position and lighting, since shadows can make depressed scars appear better or worse.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, redness or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop drainage, blisters, an open wound, fever, new numbness or a marked colour change. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, severe eye symptoms or rapidly spreading redness accompanied by feeling unwell.
