ACL and MCL sprains: symptoms, assessment and recovery

Short answer
An ACL and MCL sprain involves stretched or torn stabilising tissue inside and along the inner knee.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an ACL and MCL sprain is
It often follows a twisting movement, awkward landing or force that pushes the knee inward. The result can range from tenderness with preserved stability to substantial looseness that interferes with walking and turning.
Understanding the injury
A sprain is an injury to a ligament; the term includes both overstretching and tearing. The ACL sits centrally and helps manage forward movement and rotation of the shin. The MCL runs along the inner side and resists the joint opening inward.
An ACL and MCL sprain may present with inner-knee tenderness, swelling, reduced bending or straightening, and instability during direction changes. A pop can occur but does not identify the damaged structure by itself. Clinical tests are most informative when interpreted alongside the injury mechanism and the rest of the knee examination.
Early care and rehabilitation
Pause running, jumping and pivoting. Support the leg, apply a wrapped cold pack if it eases discomfort, and elevate the knee when swelling is troublesome. Do not force a painful stretch or use instability as a test.
Assessment helps determine whether the ligaments remain functionally stable and whether cartilage, bone or another ligament is also injured. Physiotherapy may restore comfortable motion, thigh and hip strength, balance and movement control. Splinting or another form of support may be considered when protection is needed; taping is an adjunct for selected patients, not a substitute for diagnosis or progressive exercise.
When the knee needs medical review
Get assessed soon if swelling followed the injury, the knee gives way, movement remains restricted or walking is difficult. Urgent evaluation is appropriate if the joint looks out of place, the foot becomes pale or cold, numbness develops, pain is severe after a high-force injury, or you cannot put weight through the leg.
Questions to guide recovery
You could ask whether both ligaments are involved, what degree of stability remains, whether imaging would alter care, how to use any support safely, and which movement tests must improve before returning to demanding activity.

Questions people ask
Is a sprain different from a ligament tear?
A sprain describes ligament damage and can include a partial or complete tear. The practical concern is how much tissue is damaged and whether the knee remains stable.
Can I keep exercising with an ACL and MCL sprain?
Avoid movements that cause pain, swelling or giving way until assessed. Safe exercises are selected according to stability, movement and the stage of tissue recovery.
