Acid reflux that feels worse after endoscopy

Air introduced during the procedure can cause bloating or belching, and passage of the scope may leave the throat irritated. These sensations can overlap with reflux. An endoscopy does not normally serve as a treatment for reflux, so pre-existing symptoms may also continue afterward.

Burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid rising, or symptoms after meals are consistent with reflux. A scratchy throat mainly with swallowing may instead reflect local irritation from the scope. Gas pressure is more likely to feel like fullness, distension, or repeated belching.

The exact procedure matters. Biopsies, treatments performed through the scope, sedation, and the findings may change the expected recovery advice. The discharge instructions from the endoscopy unit therefore take priority over general self-care guidance.

Follow the unit's directions about eating, drinking, driving, and restarting medicines. Once permitted to eat, choose a modest meal and stay upright afterward. Take prescribed reflux treatment exactly as directed; do not double a dose because symptoms feel stronger.

Record when the discomfort began, where it is felt, whether swallowing changes it, and whether there is fever, vomiting, abdominal swelling, or bleeding. Contact the endoscopy service or treating clinician if the symptom is intensifying rather than settling.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or increasing chest or abdominal pain, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, fever with worsening pain, marked abdominal swelling, fainting, or inability to swallow liquids. These signs need assessment for a complication or another urgent cause.

If sedation is still affecting you, have a responsible adult help follow the discharge plan and arrange care. Do not drive yourself for urgent assessment when the endoscopy team advised against driving after sedation.

Ask whether your findings explain the reflux, whether samples or treatment were taken, when results will be discussed, and whether any medicine schedule changed. Clarify whom to contact if symptoms worsen outside the clinic's usual hours.
