Acid reflux while sleeping during pregnancy

How the structures involved in Acid Reflux differ from normal

Short answer

Nighttime acid reflux in pregnancy often worsens because lying flat makes upward flow from the stomach easier.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why it flares
Lying flat removes some help from gravity
Sleep adjustment
Elevate the upper torso, not only the neck
Track
Meal timing, sleep position, coughing, and regurgitation

The main point

Pregnancy hormones can relax the barrier above the stomach, and the growing uterus can increase pressure below it. In bed, this may lead to chest burning, a sour taste, throat irritation, coughing, or waking with regurgitation.

Why bedtime changes the symptoms

Gravity helps keep stomach contents down while you are upright. That assistance decreases after you lie down, particularly if your stomach is still full. Reflux reaching higher in the oesophagus can irritate the throat and trigger a cough even when heartburn is mild.

Waking because of burning or fluid in the mouth fits a reflux pattern, but breathing difficulty, crushing pressure, faintness, or new severe pain should not be labelled as heartburn without assessment.

Set up a calmer night

Choose a smaller evening meal and remain upright afterward. If a certain food reliably precedes symptoms, reduce that trigger while keeping the rest of your diet varied. Raise the whole upper torso with a firm wedge or safely elevate the head end of the bed rather than stacking soft pillows under the neck.

Sleeping on the left side may reduce reflux for some people. Follow your maternity team's advice about comfortable pregnancy sleep positions. If physical measures are insufficient, ask a clinician or pharmacist to select a pregnancy-suitable medicine and explain how to time it with other tablets.

When nighttime reflux needs review

Book an appointment when symptoms frequently wake you, continue despite sleep and meal adjustments, cause persistent hoarseness or cough, or are accompanied by painful or difficult swallowing. Recurrent vomiting or trouble keeping fluids down also needs clinical advice.

Call for urgent help if chest pain is severe, spreads to the arm, jaw, shoulder, or back, or occurs with sweating, breathlessness, weakness, or fainting. Vomiting blood, passing black stools, or developing severe upper abdominal pain also requires urgent assessment.

Make the consultation useful

Tell your clinician how often you wake, whether you choke or cough, what time you eat, and what you have already tried. Ask how your pregnancy stage, other health conditions, and current medicines affect the safest treatment choice.

Questions people ask

Can reflux make me cough at night?

Yes. Acid reflux can present with throat irritation or cough when stomach contents travel upward, although a persistent cough can have other causes.

Is sleeping on my left side useful?

It may lessen reflux for some people because of stomach anatomy. Use a comfortable position that also follows advice from your maternity team.

Are extra pillows enough?

Loose pillows may lift only the head and bend the abdomen. A stable wedge supporting the torso or safe bed-head elevation is more likely to preserve a useful slope.
