Vomiting blood with acid reflux symptoms

Blood may appear bright red, streaked through vomit, dark red, or brown and grainy like coffee grounds. It can come from the oesophagus, stomach or first part of the small intestine. Possible causes include an ulcer, inflammation, a tear after forceful retching or bleeding from enlarged veins.

Reflux can inflame or damage the oesophagus, but visible blood must not be assumed to be reflux. Swallowed blood from a nosebleed or bleeding in the mouth can sometimes be vomited, yet a clinician still needs to establish the source.

Seek urgent medical help now. If bleeding is continuing, you feel weak or faint, or you cannot travel safely, call the UAE ambulance service on 998. Do not drive yourself. Sit or lie somewhere safe and, if possible, have another person stay with you.

Do not rely on an antacid to assess or stop bleeding. Avoid eating or drinking until emergency staff advise you, especially if an urgent procedure may be needed. Take your medicine list or packages with you and report blood thinners, aspirin and anti-inflammatory pain medicines.

Any confirmed blood in vomit warrants urgent assessment. Emergency warning signs include a large amount of blood, repeated vomiting, black tar-like stools, severe abdominal or chest pain, rapid breathing, pale clammy skin, confusion, dizziness, fainting or difficulty staying awake.

Even if the vomiting has stopped and you feel better, obtain urgent medical advice the same day. Bleeding can pause and return, and its severity cannot be judged reliably from appearance alone.

Be ready to describe the colour and approximate amount of blood, when it began, whether there was forceful retching, and whether stools became black. Tell the team about abdominal pain, dizziness, previous ulcers or liver problems, alcohol use and all medicines, including non-prescription pain relief.

Useful questions include what source of bleeding is suspected, which tests are needed, whether any medicine should be stopped, and how your reflux treatment should change after the urgent problem is addressed.
