Acid reflux in the first trimester

The uterus does not need to be large for reflux to begin. Hormonal changes can relax the valve at the top of the stomach and slow digestive movement, while nausea may alter meal timing and food choices.

Acid reflux often presents with burning behind the breastbone, sour-tasting fluid in the mouth, belching, or discomfort that follows food or lying down. Nausea and reflux can overlap, but burning or regurgitation points more specifically toward reflux than nausea alone.

Upper abdominal discomfort has several possible causes, and chest symptoms can come from the heart or lungs. Record where the sensation occurs, whether acid rises into the throat, what triggers it, and whether vomiting prevents you from drinking. That description is more useful than calling every upper-body discomfort heartburn.

Choose small, regular amounts of food if nausea makes full meals difficult, and avoid lying flat soon after eating. Sip fluids in a pattern you can tolerate, notice which foods reliably worsen burning, and avoid tight clothing across the abdomen.

Check any antacid, alginate, acid suppressant, herbal product, or home remedy with a pharmacist or pregnancy-care professional before use. Share the exact product name, prenatal supplements, prescriptions, allergies, and relevant kidney or liver conditions. If vomiting follows a dose, do not automatically repeat it; ask how to proceed.

Seek urgent assessment for severe chest pain or tightness, breathing difficulty, fainting, heavy sweating, or discomfort spreading to the jaw, arm, shoulder, or back. Previous reflux does not rule out a more urgent cause of new chest symptoms.

Contact your pregnancy-care service promptly for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, vaginal bleeding with pain or dizziness, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, or difficulty swallowing. These signs need targeted evaluation rather than reflux self-treatment.
