Can acid reflux be cured during pregnancy?

Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve between the oesophagus and stomach, while the growing uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. Management aims to reduce reflux and protect comfort until these influences change.

A treatment may neutralise acid, create a barrier above stomach contents, or reduce acid production. These approaches relieve irritation in different ways; they do not all act immediately and are not interchangeable.

Reflux in pregnancy often presents with burning behind the breastbone, an acidic taste, or regurgitation after food. Cough or sleep disruption can occur alongside it, although neither symptom is specific to reflux. Describing the timing and character of symptoms helps a clinician rule out other causes.

Begin with manageable adjustments: choose smaller meals, eat slowly, remain upright afterward, and avoid foods that consistently trigger your symptoms. For night-time burning, discuss a safe way to elevate the head end of the bed rather than stacking unstable pillows.

Ask a pharmacist, midwife, obstetric clinician, or doctor before taking reflux medicine, including herbal remedies and products left from an earlier prescription. Provide your stage of pregnancy, medical conditions, allergies, and complete medicine list. Follow the agreed dose and arrange review if the plan does not control symptoms.

Seek emergency care for severe chest tightness, trouble breathing, fainting, heavy sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, back, shoulder, or jaw. New chest symptoms require urgent assessment even if you have had heartburn before.

Call your maternity service or clinician promptly for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, a severe headache, visual disturbance, sudden swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, vomiting blood, black stools, or difficulty swallowing. Urgency follows the warning symptom, not how often reflux occurs in pregnancy.
