Pain relievers when you have acid reflux

Medicines such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin may aggravate upper-digestive symptoms in some people. Paracetamol does not have the same anti-inflammatory action and may be an option for certain types of pain, but it is not suitable for everyone or every problem.

Anti-inflammatory pain relievers can affect the protective lining of the stomach and may contribute to indigestion, ulcers, or bleeding. The risk depends on the medicine, dose, duration, your medical history, and combinations with other treatments.

A pain reliever does not treat the underlying reflux. Antacids and alginates act differently by neutralising acid or forming a barrier, while acid-suppressing medicines reduce acid production. Each option has cautions and possible interactions.

Check the active ingredients on the packet so you do not accidentally take the same medicine in separate cold, flu, or pain products. Follow the label, use the lowest appropriate dose for the shortest necessary time, and avoid taking someone else's prescription.

Ask a pharmacist before choosing a pain reliever if you have reflux, a previous ulcer, kidney or liver disease, asthma affected by medicines, take blood thinners, are pregnant, or use several treatments. If an anti-inflammatory is prescribed, ask how to take it and whether stomach protection is needed.

Stop self-treatment and obtain urgent medical advice for vomiting blood, vomit resembling coffee grounds, black sticky stools, severe or increasing abdominal pain, faintness, or unusual weakness. Call emergency services for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, collapse, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Arrange a routine review when reflux begins after a new medicine, keeps recurring, disrupts sleep, or requires regular remedies. Do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly unless a clinician advises it, except when emergency instructions tell you otherwise.

Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal remedies. Ask which ingredient suits the cause of your pain, what warning effects to watch for, and whether an existing reflux treatment needs adjustment.
