Acid reflux medicine during pregnancy

Short answer
Several reflux treatments may be considered during pregnancy, but the exact product and dose should be checked with a clinician or pharmacist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First check
- Confirm the active ingredient
- Useful habit
- Stay upright after meals
- Medicine timing
- Ask about spacing from prenatal supplements
The safest starting point
Suitability depends on the active ingredient, stage of pregnancy, other conditions and medicines. A familiar brand can contain more than one ingredient, so show the full package when seeking advice.
Why reflux can increase in pregnancy
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscular valve between the oesophagus and stomach. As the uterus grows, pressure within the abdomen can also encourage stomach contents to move upwards. Burning behind the breastbone and sour regurgitation may therefore become more noticeable after meals or when lying down.
Reflux itself does not explain every chest or upper-abdominal symptom in pregnancy. New, intense or unusual pain should be assessed on its features rather than automatically attributed to heartburn.
A stepwise approach to symptom control
Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, notice foods that reliably trigger symptoms, and raise the upper body for sleep rather than adding pillows that bend the waist. Avoid restrictive diets unless a maternity clinician advises them, because nutrition still matters during pregnancy.
If these changes are insufficient, ask about an antacid or alginate suitable for pregnancy. Some products need spacing from iron, folic acid or other tablets because they can affect absorption. A clinician may consider an acid-suppressing medicine when symptoms remain troublesome, using an ingredient and regimen suited to your circumstances.
When to get urgent help
Seek emergency care for severe chest tightness, trouble breathing, fainting, coughing blood, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back or neck. These features need immediate assessment even when you have experienced reflux before.
Contact maternity services urgently for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, a severe headache with visual changes, sudden marked swelling, or reduced baby movement once you normally feel movement. Prompt review is also needed for vomiting blood, black stools, inability to keep fluids down, painful swallowing or signs of dehydration.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask which active ingredient is suitable now, when to take it around prenatal supplements, how long the treatment should continue, and what symptoms should trigger reassessment. Mention kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, allergies and every prescribed, non-prescribed or herbal product you use.

Questions people ask
Can I use my usual reflux medicine while pregnant?
Do not assume that a usual product remains suitable. Have a pharmacist, GP or maternity clinician check its ingredients, dose and your other medicines.
Can antacids interfere with prenatal supplements?
Some antacids can alter the absorption of iron, folic acid or other tablets. Ask how much time to leave between the specific products you use.
Should I stop a prescribed reflux medicine after a positive pregnancy test?
Contact the prescriber or maternity team promptly for an individual review rather than stopping or changing the dose on your own.
