What to know about Prilosec for acid reflux

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It is intended for acid control rather than instant relief, and the available formulation or brand name may differ between countries and pharmacies.

By blocking pumps in the stomach lining, omeprazole decreases the acid available to irritate the oesophagus. This can ease burning, sour regurgitation and symptoms that occur after meals or when lying down.

Acid reduction does not physically tighten the valve above the stomach or remove a hiatus hernia. Ongoing symptoms may reflect incorrect timing, non-acid reflux or another condition, so repeatedly increasing treatment without assessment can hide the real problem.

Read the active ingredient, strength and directions because similarly branded products may not be identical. Swallow delayed-release forms as directed rather than crushing them, avoid doubling a forgotten dose, and tell a pharmacist or prescriber about all regular medicines and supplements.

Possible effects include headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea. Seek advice when an effect persists or a new rash develops. If treatment is continuing beyond the originally agreed course, arrange a medication review rather than renewing it indefinitely without discussion.

Get emergency help for chest pressure or tightness with shortness of breath, sweating, collapse or pain travelling to the jaw, arm, neck or back. A reflux history does not make those symptoms safe to manage at home.

Contact a clinician promptly if swallowing becomes difficult or painful, food catches in the throat, you vomit blood, stools turn black, vomiting recurs, weight drops without trying, or pain is severe. Facial or throat swelling and breathing difficulty after medicine also require urgent care.

Confirm whether Prilosec and any other product you use contain the same active ingredient. Ask about the intended course, dose timing, interactions, a plan for stopping, and whether continued cough, night waking or regurgitation points to a need for further evaluation.
