Nexium for acid reflux

It is used for reflux symptoms and for healing or protecting the oesophagus in selected patients. It is not an instant neutraliser like an antacid, so correct timing and regular use matter. The suitable dose and treatment length depend on the diagnosis and individual health history.

Esomeprazole blocks acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining. Lower acidity means refluxed stomach contents are less irritating to the oesophagus, although the medicine does not physically stop material moving upwards. Symptoms may therefore be influenced by meal size, lying down after food or a hiatus hernia even during treatment.

Delayed-release tablets or capsules are designed to protect the medicine until it reaches the intestine. They should be swallowed or handled according to the product instructions rather than crushed automatically.

Use the dose and schedule on your prescription or product label. It is commonly timed before food, but follow the instructions for your formulation. If you miss a dose, use the package guidance and do not double the next dose unless a clinician has specifically told you to.

Tell a doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines, particularly blood thinners, certain antiviral or antifungal treatments, methotrexate and other acid-reducing products. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, low magnesium, osteoporosis risk or prolonged treatment can also change the monitoring or treatment decision.

Get emergency care for severe chest pain, pressure or tightness, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to another body area. Do not take an extra dose to test whether a potentially serious symptom is reflux.

Seek prompt assessment for vomiting blood, black stools, trouble swallowing, food sticking, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss or worsening abdominal pain. Contact a clinician if symptoms fail to improve with correct use, return whenever treatment stops, or if you develop a significant new symptom after starting the medicine.

Ask what diagnosis the medicine is treating, when benefit should be reassessed and whether you need a planned dose reduction. Confirm how to manage breakthrough symptoms and whether your other medicines or health conditions call for monitoring.
