Short answer

During pregnancy, start with practical measures and ask a pharmacist, midwife or doctor to check any reflux medicine before use.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Confirm the exact active ingredients with a maternity clinician or pharmacist.
Helpful habit
Remaining upright after meals may reduce reflux into the oesophagus.

Some remedies need spacing from iron or other tablets.

The short answer

Some antacids and alginate products may be suitable, and an acid-suppressing medicine may be considered when symptoms are not controlled. Suitability depends on the active ingredients, stage of pregnancy, other health conditions and medicines or supplements already being taken.

Why reflux can occur in pregnancy

Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle that normally helps keep stomach contents from moving into the oesophagus. As the uterus grows, pressure within the abdomen can add to reflux. Burning behind the breastbone, an acidic taste, belching and symptoms after eating or lying down can result.

Products sold for indigestion are not interchangeable. Ingredients such as sodium salts, magnesium salts, calcium salts or aspirin-like compounds require individual checking, particularly with high blood pressure, kidney disease, fluid restriction or another pregnancy complication.

What you can do

Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating and note which foods or drinks trigger symptoms. Raising the head and upper body for sleep may help night-time reflux. Avoid starting herbal remedies or using bicarbonate from the kitchen as treatment without professional advice.

Show the exact package to a pharmacist or maternity clinician. They can check the active ingredients, dose, timing and whether the product should be separated from iron, folic acid or other tablets. If a prescribed acid-suppressing medicine is needed, take it as directed and discuss any planned change before stopping it.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, faintness, vomiting blood or black stools. Upper abdominal pain with a severe headache, visual disturbance, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell also needs urgent maternity assessment rather than treatment as simple heartburn.

Contact your maternity team or doctor if swallowing is difficult, vomiting prevents you keeping fluids down, you are losing weight, or reflux remains troublesome despite the advised measures. These features can require examination and a different treatment plan.

Questions for your maternity clinician

Confirm which product and dose are appropriate for you, how to time it around supplements, and what to do if it does not control symptoms. Mention previous reflux disease, stomach ulcers, kidney problems and every prescription, non-prescription or herbal product you use.

Questions people ask

Can I use my usual reflux medicine while pregnant?

Do not assume a familiar product remains appropriate. Have its ingredients and dose checked alongside your pregnancy stage, medical history and current medicines.

Does pregnancy heartburn harm the baby?

Reflux symptoms come from stomach contents moving into the oesophagus and do not directly reach the baby. Severe pain, dehydration, bleeding or other concerning symptoms still need assessment.
