Acid reflux medicine for adults

Short answer
Adults can use antacids, alginate products, H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors, depending on symptom pattern and medical history.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Fast relief
- Antacids and alginates are commonly used for occasional symptoms.
- Persistent symptoms
- Acid-suppressing treatment may need regular, correctly timed use.
- Safety check
- A pharmacist can screen for duplicate ingredients and interactions.
The short answer
Antacids neutralise acid already in the stomach, while alginates form a barrier that helps limit reflux. H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors reduce acid production and are generally used when symptoms are more persistent. The right choice also depends on other medicines, kidney or liver problems, pregnancy and the reason symptoms are occurring.
How the medicine types differ
A fast-acting product may suit occasional burning after a meal, but its effect can be brief. Acid-suppressing medicines do not give the same immediate relief; some work better when taken regularly and at a particular time in relation to food. A pharmacist can check the active ingredient because different brand names may contain similar medicines.
Regular reflux can irritate the oesophagus and may also present with sour fluid in the mouth, throat irritation or cough. Medicine can reduce symptoms, but it does not correct every contributor, such as a hiatus hernia or pressure on the abdomen.
Using treatment safely
Read the label, use the stated dose and avoid combining products with the same active ingredient. Ask a pharmacist about spacing antacids from other tablets because they can alter absorption. Mention blood thinners, anti-inflammatory pain medicines and treatment for heart, kidney or liver conditions before choosing a product.
Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating and identifying personal food or drink triggers can support treatment. If you need medicine repeatedly, arrange a clinical review rather than continuing to switch products on your own.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for new or severe chest pain or tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Do not assume these symptoms are reflux.
Book a medical assessment for difficulty or pain when swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, or symptoms that continue despite correctly used treatment. A clinician may look for another cause and decide whether testing is needed.
Questions for your doctor or pharmacist
Ask which active ingredient fits your symptom pattern, when to take it, how long to try it and whether it interacts with your regular medicines. Also ask what changes would mean you should stop self-treatment or have further evaluation.

Questions people ask
Can I take reflux medicine every day?
Some acid-suppressing medicines are prescribed for daily use, but ongoing self-treatment should be reviewed so the diagnosis, dose, interactions and continued need can be checked.
Why has my reflux medicine not worked straight away?
Antacids act differently from acid-suppressing medicines. A proton pump inhibitor may require consistent timing and repeated use before its full benefit is apparent; incorrect timing or a different cause of symptoms can also reduce benefit.
