Understanding medicine for acid reflux

Some products give short-term relief after symptoms begin, while acid-suppressing medicines are taken on a planned schedule. They can reduce irritation but do not correct every reason that stomach contents move upwards.

Antacids neutralise acid already in the stomach. Alginate products form a floating barrier that can limit reflux after eating. Histamine blockers reduce acid production, while proton pump inhibitors provide stronger suppression and work most effectively when taken at the instructed time rather than only after discomfort starts.

Choice depends on how often symptoms occur, whether they happen at night, other health conditions and current medicines. Similar burning or chest discomfort can come from causes that need different care, so response to an acid medicine does not prove the diagnosis.

Read the label, follow the dose and timing instructions, and check whether the product should be separated from other tablets. Tell a pharmacist about prescriptions, supplements, pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, and previous stomach bleeding before choosing a non-prescription option.

Combine treatment with smaller meals if large portions trigger symptoms, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and reducing only the foods or drinks that consistently affect you. Do not increase the dose, mix several reflux products, or continue long-term self-treatment without clinical advice.

Arrange an appointment when symptoms keep returning, wake you from sleep, do not respond to correctly used treatment, or return promptly when it stops. Difficulty swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain or anaemia symptoms need assessment.

Call emergency services for new or severe chest tightness or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or discomfort spreading to the jaw, arm or back. Do not wait to see whether an antacid relieves these warning signs.

Ask which medicine group matches your symptom pattern, exactly when to take it, how long the trial should be, and whether it interacts with anything else you use. Confirm whether recurrent symptoms require testing or a review of the diagnosis.
