Treatment for laryngitis linked to acid reflux

Short answer
Treatment for reflux-related laryngitis combines reducing reflux exposure, protecting the voice, and confirming the diagnosis when symptoms persist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Treatment focus
- Limit reflux exposure and reduce strain on the voice
- Avoid
- Whispering and repeated forceful throat clearing
- Diagnosis
- Persistent hoarseness may require examination of the larynx
The short answer
Management may include meal and sleep changes, an alginate or acid-suppressing medicine when appropriate, hydration, and avoiding vocal strain. Hoarseness is not specific to reflux, so ongoing voice symptoms should not be treated indefinitely without examining other possible causes.
How reflux can affect the larynx
Stomach contents that travel beyond the oesophagus may reach the throat and irritate the larynx. Possible features include hoarseness, a rough or tiring voice, throat clearing, a lump sensation, or cough. Some people have little heartburn, but that does not make these throat symptoms diagnostic of reflux.
Viral illness, allergy, smoke exposure, inhaled medicines, heavy voice use, and changes affecting the vocal cords can look similar. A clinician may examine the mouth and neck and decide whether direct assessment of the larynx is needed.
Caring for reflux and your voice
Choose smaller meals if fullness triggers reflux, avoid lying down soon after eating, and limit only triggers that consistently affect you. If night symptoms occur, raising the head end of the bed may help. Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke where possible.
Drink water regularly, rest the voice when it feels strained, and speak at a comfortable volume. Whispering can strain the voice, while repeated forceful throat clearing can prolong irritation. Use prescribed acid suppression at the stated timing and continue any planned review even if the voice begins to improve.
When hoarseness needs medical care
Arrange an assessment for hoarseness that does not settle, keeps returning, or occurs with painful or difficult swallowing, a neck lump, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, persistent one-sided ear pain, or worsening cough. People who smoke should mention this when booking the visit.
Seek urgent help for noisy or difficult breathing, an inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or sudden severe breathing distress. These are airway warning signs, regardless of whether reflux has been diagnosed.
Questions about your treatment plan
Ask what supports reflux as the cause, whether the vocal cords need examination, and how long to try each measure before judging it. Clarify medicine timing, voice-care advice, whether speech and language therapy could help, and what symptoms should bring the follow-up forward.

Questions people ask
Will acid suppression alone fix reflux-related laryngitis?
Not necessarily. Treatment may also involve meal timing, sleep position, trigger management, hydration, and voice care. Lack of improvement should prompt review of the diagnosis.
Should I whisper while my voice is hoarse?
Usually no. Whispering can increase strain for some people. Use a gentle, comfortable speaking voice, avoid shouting, rest when needed, and seek advice if hoarseness persists.
