Acid-reflux-friendly foods

Short answer
Reflux-friendly eating often involves modest portions of lower-fat, minimally spicy foods chosen according to your own repeatable symptom pattern.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Plate pattern
- Grain or potato, lean protein and vegetables
- Cooking methods
- Bake, steam, poach or grill
- Personalisation
- Retain restrictions only when a repeatable pattern supports them
The short answer
Good building blocks include porridge, rice, potatoes, wholegrain breads, pulses, lean meat or fish, tofu, vegetables and non-citrus fruits. Preparation and portion size can matter as much as the ingredient itself.
What makes a food reflux-friendly
A food is useful when it provides nourishment without reliably bringing on burning, regurgitation or throat symptoms for you. Fatty meals empty from the stomach more slowly, while large servings stretch the stomach; either effect can make upward flow more likely.
Acidity and heat are separate qualities. Tomato and citrus are acidic, whereas chilli creates heat. Either may bother one person and cause no problem for another, so a personalised pattern is more informative than a universal avoidance chart.
Stock and prepare gentler options
Build breakfast around oats, wholegrain toast or eggs if tolerated. For main meals, pair rice, couscous or potato with grilled fish, skinless poultry, beans or tofu and plenty of vegetables. Bananas, melon, pears and yoghurt can be snack options depending on your tolerance.
Bake, steam, poach or grill more often than frying. Flavour food with herbs rather than heavy chilli, and serve dressings or rich sauces separately. Test one adjustment for several meals while noting portion, timing and posture, then keep only changes that clearly help.
Signs food changes are not enough
See a clinician when reflux is frequent, increasingly severe, interrupts sleep, or continues despite reasonable meal adjustments. Arrange prompt assessment for trouble swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, unexplained weight loss or persistent upper-abdominal pain.
Seek emergency help for chest tightness or pressure with sweating, faintness, breathlessness, nausea, or pain that travels to the arm, neck, jaw or back. Do not delay care to see whether a different food settles these symptoms.
Nutrition questions to raise
If your safe-food list is becoming narrow, ask whether a dietitian could help restore variety. Also ask whether medicine, constipation, a hiatus hernia or another digestive problem could be contributing to symptoms despite careful eating.

Questions people ask
Is yoghurt reflux-friendly?
Some people tolerate yoghurt well, particularly a lower-fat plain variety, while others notice symptoms. Try a modest serving and observe your response.
Are salads always better than cooked vegetables?
No. Both can be nutritious, and cooked vegetables may feel easier for some people. Rich dressings, raw onion or a very large serving may be the relevant trigger rather than salad itself.
Can I still drink coffee?
Coffee triggers reflux in some people but not everyone. If the timing repeatedly fits, reduce the serving or pause it, then reassess without changing several other foods at once.
