Short answer

Choose smaller meals built around vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and non-citrus fruit, while tracking which foods trigger your own reflux.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful starting point
Smaller, lower-fat meals with vegetables, grains and lean protein
Trigger strategy
Track food, portion, timing and symptoms together
After eating
Stay upright rather than lying down immediately

The short answer

Oats, rice, wholegrain bread, lentils, skinless chicken, fish, leafy vegetables, cucumber, carrots, bananas and melon are practical starting points. Individual tolerance matters more than following a rigid forbidden-food list.

How food affects reflux

Reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. A very full stomach, rich or fatty meals, and lying down soon after eating can make that movement easier. Some people also notice symptoms after spicy food, tomato, citrus, chocolate, mint, coffee or fizzy drinks, but triggers vary.

The useful question is not whether a food is universally good or bad. Notice the food, portion, timing and symptoms together. This helps separate a true pattern from a meal that happened to coincide with heartburn.

Build meals that feel comfortable

Start with a modest portion and eat slowly. Combine a grain or starchy vegetable with lean protein and cooked or fresh vegetables. Use grilling, baking, steaming or poaching instead of deep-frying, and choose lighter sauces when rich sauces provoke symptoms.

Keep a simple food-and-symptom diary, changing one suspected trigger at a time. Finish evening meals well before lying down. If symptoms occur at night, remaining upright after dinner may help. Avoid cutting out several nutritious food groups without advice from a clinician or dietitian.

When symptoms need medical care

Arrange a medical review if reflux keeps returning, wakes you from sleep, causes persistent cough or does not improve after sensible meal changes. Seek prompt care for trouble or pain when swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss or severe abdominal pain.

Call emergency services for new or severe chest pressure or tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Heart problems can resemble indigestion and should not be managed as a food trigger.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether your symptom pattern fits reflux, whether any medicines or supplements could aggravate it, and how long to try food changes before reassessment. If you have removed many foods, ask for help keeping meals nutritionally balanced.

Questions people ask

Are bananas suitable for acid reflux?

Bananas are non-citrus fruit and many people tolerate them, although any food can be a personal trigger. Record symptoms if you are unsure.

Do I need to stop all spicy food?

Not automatically. Reduce it if you repeatedly notice reflux afterward, then test a milder portion once symptoms settle rather than restricting it without a clear pattern.

Is milk a reflux remedy?

Milk may feel soothing briefly, but higher-fat milk can aggravate symptoms for some people. Treat it as a food whose effect depends on type, portion and personal tolerance.
