Short answer

Some medicines can trigger or worsen acid reflux, but you should not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Do not stop suddenly
Stopping some prescribed medicines abruptly can be harmful; first obtain medical advice.
Useful record
Track dose times, food, posture, and the onset of symptoms.
Medication check
A pharmacist can assess dosing instructions and possible interactions.

The short answer

A clinician or pharmacist can check whether the timing, dose, formulation, or a different medicine could reduce symptoms without interrupting necessary treatment.

How medicine may contribute

A medicine may relax the muscular valve between the stomach and oesophagus, slow stomach emptying, or irritate the lining of the oesophagus or stomach. Reflux can then cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, belching, throat irritation, or symptoms that are worse after meals or when lying down.

The medicine may not be the only factor. Meal size, late eating, alcohol, smoking, and an existing reflux condition can influence when symptoms appear. Note when the discomfort starts in relation to each dose rather than assuming the newest medicine is responsible.

Practical steps

Keep a brief record of the medicine name, dose time, meals, and symptoms. Take tablets with the amount of water and in the position specified on the label; some medicines have special instructions about food or remaining upright. Avoid changing how a tablet is crushed, split, or taken unless a pharmacist confirms that it is suitable.

Smaller meals, avoiding food close to bedtime, and raising the head end when night symptoms occur may help. Before using an antacid or acid-reducing product, ask a pharmacist about interactions and how far apart it should be taken from your other medicines.

When to get medical help

Arrange a medical review if reflux began after starting or increasing a medicine, keeps returning, disturbs sleep, or is accompanied by trouble swallowing, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, black stools, or blood in vomit.

Seek urgent care for severe or unfamiliar chest pressure, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. These features need prompt assessment rather than being treated as reflux at home.

Questions for your clinician or pharmacist

Ask whether the medicine can affect reflux, whether your dosing technique is correct, and whether a safer timing or formulation change is possible. Bring a complete list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements so interactions can be checked.

Questions people ask

Should I stop the medicine that seems to cause reflux?

Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Contact the prescriber or a pharmacist to discuss the symptoms and possible adjustments.

Can I take an antacid with my regular medicine?

Possibly, but antacids can alter the absorption of certain medicines. A pharmacist can tell you whether the combination is appropriate and how to space the doses.

What details should I record?

Write down the medicine and dose, when you took it, whether you ate, when you lay down, and when burning or regurgitation began.
