Medication for acid reflux disease

Antacids and alginate products may ease occasional symptoms, while acid-reducing medicines such as H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors are used for longer control in suitable patients. Follow the label or prescription because timing and duration differ.

Antacids neutralise acid already present. Alginates form a barrier above stomach contents. H2 blockers reduce acid production, and proton pump inhibitors suppress it more strongly. These products can relieve burning and allow an irritated oesophagus to heal, but they do not address every cause of chest discomfort or upper abdominal symptoms.

Side effects depend on the product and can include diarrhoea, constipation, headache or stomach upset. Some reflux medicines also alter how other drugs are absorbed or processed, which makes a complete medication list useful.

Read the active ingredient, dose instructions and warnings rather than choosing by brand name. Ask a pharmacist to check for duplication and interactions if you take prescriptions, supplements or more than one indigestion product. Mention pregnancy, kidney or liver disease, osteoporosis, previous stomach bleeding and any drug allergy.

Take the medicine at the instructed time and do not increase the dose because relief is incomplete. Combine treatment with smaller meals, avoiding your clear triggers and staying upright after eating. If a prescribed medicine has been used regularly, discuss changes with the prescriber instead of stopping suddenly on your own.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms continue despite correctly used medicine, return whenever treatment stops, disturb sleep, or require repeated pharmacy treatment. A clinician should also assess difficult or painful swallowing, food sticking, ongoing vomiting, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, black stools or blood in vomit.

Call emergency services for new severe chest pressure, breathing difficulty, collapse, or chest pain with sweating or pain spreading to the jaw, back or arm. Stop a newly taken product and seek urgent help if you develop facial swelling, wheezing or trouble breathing.

Ask what the medicine is intended to do, when it should be taken, how long the trial should last and which effects should prompt contact. Clarify whether persistent symptoms require a different dose, another diagnosis or an examination of the oesophagus.
