A practical diet plan for acid reflux

Short answer

An acid reflux diet plan should use smaller meals, sensible timing and your own proven food triggers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core approach
Adjust meal size, timing and confirmed personal triggers.
Evening habit
Avoid lying down soon after a substantial meal.
Nutrition goal
Replace troublesome foods rather than cutting whole food groups.

The short answer

There is no single menu that suits everyone. Start with balanced foods you tolerate, change one feature at a time, and judge the result from a symptom diary rather than removing many foods at once.

What makes a reflux-friendly plan

Large or rich meals can stretch the stomach and make backflow more noticeable. Eating slowly, stopping before you feel overfull and leaving time between dinner and lying down may reduce evening symptoms. Common personal triggers include fatty dishes, spicy foods, tomatoes, citrus, chocolate, mint, coffee and fizzy drinks, but a food matters only if it repeatedly affects you.

A useful plan still provides vegetables, fruit, whole grains, protein and adequate fluid. Choose gentler alternatives within the same food group instead of allowing a trigger list to make the diet nutritionally narrow.

How to build your daily plan

Base breakfast on oats, wholegrain toast or another tolerated staple with a protein food. For lunch and dinner, pair vegetables and a grain or starchy food with beans, fish, eggs, poultry or another suitable protein. Use smaller portions and add a light snack if long gaps lead to overeating.

Record the meal, portion, time and symptoms for several days. If one item appears linked, reduce it and observe before excluding it. Stay upright after food, limit late heavy meals, and use water as the default drink. A dietitian can help if allergies, pregnancy, diabetes, kidney disease or weight loss complicate planning.

When diet changes are not enough

Book a medical review when reflux remains frequent despite these adjustments, repeatedly wakes you, or leads to regular use of pharmacy remedies. Prompt assessment is also needed for painful or difficult swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, black stools or blood in vomit.

Seek emergency help for tight or heavy chest pain, especially with sweating, breathlessness, faintness, or pain moving to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Do not assume a new chest symptom is digestive.

What to discuss at an appointment

Ask whether your pattern fits reflux disease, whether any medicine may aggravate symptoms, and how long to try dietary changes before reassessment. Mention nighttime symptoms, swallowing problems and every non-prescription remedy you take.

Questions people ask

Do I need to avoid every common reflux trigger?

No. Trigger patterns vary, so restrict foods that repeatedly provoke your symptoms. Broad exclusions can make meals difficult and may reduce nutritional variety.

Can I still drink coffee with acid reflux?

Some people notice symptoms after coffee, while others do not. Try a smaller serving, a lower-caffeine option or a temporary reduction, then use your symptom record to decide.
