Relieving a burning throat from acid reflux

Short answer
A burning throat from acid reflux may ease with upright posture, smaller meals and avoiding personal triggers, but persistent or severe symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Do not lie flat soon after eating. Water may briefly soothe irritation, while an antacid or acid-reducing medicine may be appropriate if a pharmacist or clinician confirms it suits your health and other medicines.
Why reflux can burn the throat
Reflux occurs when stomach contents travel upwards into the food pipe. If they reach higher, acid and digestive material can irritate the throat, causing burning, a sour taste, hoarseness, throat clearing or a cough. Symptoms may be more noticeable after a large or fatty meal, when bending, or while lying down.
Throat burning also has other causes, including infections, allergies, smoke exposure and some medicines. A clinician can distinguish these possibilities when the pattern is unclear.
Steps that can bring relief
Eat modest portions, slow the pace of meals and note which foods or drinks reliably bring on symptoms. Common personal triggers can include spicy or rich meals, caffeine, fizzy drinks and late eating, but restriction is only useful when a trigger is reproducible.
Remain upright after meals and raise the head end of the bed if symptoms disturb sleep; stacking loose pillows can bend the abdomen and be less helpful. Avoid smoking, and discuss frequent use of over-the-counter remedies with a pharmacist or doctor so the cause and safest treatment are addressed.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical appointment if throat burning keeps returning, wakes you from sleep, persists despite self-care, or comes with trouble swallowing, pain on swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, ongoing hoarseness or a persistent cough.
Seek urgent help for chest pressure or tightness, difficulty breathing, fainting, vomit containing blood, black stools, or severe and worsening chest or upper abdominal pain. These features should not be assumed to be reflux.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the timing and location of the burning fit reflux, whether any current medicine could aggravate it, and which treatment is suitable for you. If symptoms continue, ask whether examination of the throat, testing for another cause or a change in treatment is warranted.

Questions people ask
Can water stop reflux throat burning?
Small sips may temporarily soothe the throat and clear an acidic taste, but water does not correct the mechanism causing reflux.
Should I take an antacid for a burning throat?
An antacid may help occasional reflux symptoms. Check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have kidney or heart problems, take other medicines, or need remedies repeatedly.
Why is the burning worse at night?
Lying flat makes it easier for stomach contents to travel upwards, especially after a late or substantial meal.
