Acid reflux and Tums

Follow the exact label for the product you have because strengths and ingredients can vary. If you need it repeatedly, a pharmacist or doctor can check the diagnosis, your other medicines and whether a longer-acting treatment is appropriate.

Tums is a brand of antacid commonly containing calcium carbonate. It reacts with acid already in the stomach, so it may settle burning or sour-tasting reflux for a while. It does not stop stomach contents moving upward, and it is not designed to repair inflammation caused by recurring reflux.

Antacids can affect how the body absorbs some prescription medicines and supplements. Constipation, wind or stomach discomfort can occur, while taking more than directed can cause additional problems. Your own pack and pharmacist are the right sources for dose and spacing instructions.

Check the active ingredients and maximum label dose, chew the tablet as directed and avoid combining it with another antacid containing the same ingredient. Ask a pharmacist before use if you have kidney disease, high calcium levels, kidney stones, are pregnant, or take regular medicines.

For fewer reflux episodes, notice whether large or late meals trigger symptoms, remain upright after eating and reduce foods or drinks that reliably bring on burning. If symptoms keep returning, record when they occur and what you took; that pattern can guide a treatment review.

Arrange a clinical review if reflux is frequent, wakes you from sleep, persists despite appropriate antacid use, or comes with repeated vomiting, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss or food sticking when you swallow. These details can point to inflammation or another problem that needs assessment.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood, black tar-like stool, fainting, severe chest pain, major breathing difficulty or chest pressure with sweating or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Do not use an antacid response to decide whether chest symptoms are serious.

Bring the product pack and a full medicine list. Ask whether any medicine may be worsening reflux, how far apart the antacid should be taken from other tablets, and whether your symptom pattern calls for a medicine that reduces acid production rather than another short burst of neutralisation.
