Acid reflux and a stuffy nose

Both symptoms can occur at once without sharing a single cause. Looking at their timing helps: reflux commonly follows food or lying down, while congestion may track with sneezing, illness, dust, pets, perfume, air conditioning or a particular season.

Reflux involves stomach contents moving into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, sour taste or upper-throat irritation. It does not ordinarily explain obvious swelling inside the nose on its own.

Nasal inflammation narrows the air passages and may produce discharge, facial pressure, reduced smell or mouth breathing. Itchy eyes and repeated sneezing fit an allergic pattern; fever and feeling generally unwell may accompany an infection. Mouth breathing can dry the throat and make existing reflux-related irritation feel worse.

Reduce reflux pressure by choosing smaller meals, staying upright after eating and avoiding food just before sleep. Note rather than assume personal food triggers. If symptoms are worse in bed, raising the head end can reduce upward flow.

Saline spray may moisturise and clear the nose. For a nasal rinse, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water, and clean the device after use. Limit smoke and strong fragrances. Ask a pharmacist before using a decongestant, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, pregnancy or other medicines.

See a clinician if congestion persists on one side, repeatedly returns, or comes with facial swelling, severe facial pain, bloody discharge, reduced smell or ongoing fever. Reflux also needs review when it is frequent, wakes you from sleep, makes swallowing difficult, or occurs with unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, severe headache with neck stiffness, or chest pain associated with sweating, faintness, breathlessness or spreading discomfort. These are not symptoms to monitor at home.

Tell your clinician whether blockage affects one or both nostrils, what the discharge looks like, and whether you sneeze or have itchy eyes. Also explain how reflux relates to meals and sleep. Ask whether allergy treatment, nasal examination or a structured reflux plan is appropriate.
