Acid reflux while taking antibiotics

Nausea, indigestion and abdominal discomfort can be antibiotic side effects. Some tablets may irritate the food pipe if swallowed with too little water or if you lie down immediately afterward, producing burning or painful swallowing that can resemble reflux.

Burning behind the breastbone with sour fluid rising after meals fits acid reflux. Pain that begins soon after swallowing a tablet, hurts with each swallow or feels as though medicine is stuck may indicate direct irritation of the food pipe.

Diarrhoea and nausea more often reflect digestive side effects or the infection being treated. A new rash, facial or throat swelling, wheezing or breathing difficulty suggests an allergic reaction, not routine reflux, and requires urgent action.

Follow the dispensing label because some antibiotics are taken with food and others on an empty stomach. Swallow tablets with enough water and remain upright afterward when the instructions advise it. Do not crush, skip or stop doses unless the prescriber or pharmacist tells you to.

Antacids and mineral supplements can reduce absorption of certain antibiotics when taken too close together. Before adding a reflux remedy, give the pharmacist the antibiotic name plus your full medicine and supplement list so they can provide the correct spacing and check interactions.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist if the burning is persistent, swallowing becomes painful, food feels stuck, vomiting continues or the symptoms prevent you from taking the antibiotic as directed. They can decide whether the medicine, formulation or treatment plan needs changing.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth, tongue, face or throat, fainting, or a rapidly spreading blistering or peeling rash. Vomiting blood, passing black stools, severe chest pain or severe abdominal pain also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether this antibiotic should be taken with food, how long to stay upright, and how to separate it from antacids, iron, calcium or other supplements. Explain exactly when the discomfort began and whether you have rash, diarrhoea, painful swallowing or worsening infection symptoms.
