Acid reflux after delivery

Short answer
Acid reflux may continue for a while after delivery, but persistent or worsening symptoms deserve review because postpartum pain and medicines can have several causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why heartburn can linger
Pregnancy-related pressure has eased after birth, yet digestive symptoms may not disappear immediately. Irregular meals, lying down soon after feeding the baby, constipation, disrupted sleep and certain pain medicines can aggravate burning or regurgitation. Reflux often feels like heat rising behind the breastbone or sour liquid in the throat. It should be distinguished from new chest pressure, breathlessness or severe upper-abdominal pain.
Postpartum steps that may help
Keep easy, smaller meals available and sit upright while eating and for a period afterward. Record whether particular foods, late meals or a newly started pain medicine coincide with symptoms. When resting after a night feed, support your upper body instead of lying flat immediately after food. If you are breastfeeding, tell the pharmacist or prescriber before taking a reflux remedy; they can check the active ingredient, dose and compatibility with feeding and your other medicines. Do not stop a prescribed postpartum medicine without discussing an alternative.
Warning signs after delivery
Arrange a clinical review if symptoms recur often, disturb sleep, make swallowing painful, cause repeated vomiting or continue despite self-care. Get urgent help for chest pressure or pain with shortness of breath, sweating, faintness, a racing heartbeat, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with vision changes, or sudden swelling also requires prompt assessment after birth.
What to discuss at a check-up
Tell the clinician when symptoms began in relation to delivery and whether they changed after starting pain relief, iron or another medicine. Ask whether your symptom pattern needs examination, which treatment is appropriate during breastfeeding, and when treatment should be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Why did my reflux not stop as soon as I gave birth?
Digestive symptoms can take time to settle, and postpartum routines or medicines may keep provoking reflux. Symptoms that persist, intensify or interfere with eating should be assessed.
Is chest discomfort after delivery just heartburn?
It cannot safely be assumed to be heartburn. New pressure-like pain, breathlessness, faintness, sweating, palpitations or spreading pain needs urgent medical assessment.
