What should you know about acid for blackheads?

Other exfoliating acids mainly work at the skin surface and may help texture, but a stronger peel is not automatically more effective. Product choice should reflect skin sensitivity, the rest of the routine and whether the bumps are truly blackheads.

A blackhead is an open comedone: oil and shed skin cells collect in a pore while its opening remains exposed. The dark surface comes from oxidation, not trapped dirt. Scrubbing harder therefore does not remove the underlying tendency to clog and can inflame the surrounding skin.

Blackheads are a typical feature of comedonal acne, and acne can also present with whiteheads, inflamed spots or deeper lesions. Similar-looking dots on the nose may be normal sebaceous filaments, which tend to refill even after temporary clearing.

Choose a clearly labelled leave-on or wash-off product intended for the face and follow its directions. Begin cautiously, patch-test if your skin is reactive, and introduce only one active change at a time. Apply to intact skin and avoid eyelids, lips and freshly shaved or picked areas.

Pair the active with a mild cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser and daytime sun protection. Do not combine it impulsively with scrubs, home peels or several acne actives. If blackheads remain troublesome, a clinician can consider extraction, a topical retinoid or broader acne treatment based on the full pattern.

Stop the acid if the skin becomes intensely painful, swollen, blistered, raw or crusted. Rinse accidental eye exposure with plenty of water, and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness or a severe spreading reaction.

Book a dermatology assessment when acne includes deep painful lumps, begins to scar, causes marked distress or fails to improve with a consistent gentle routine. A sudden crop of unusual dark bumps, especially if itchy or bleeding, also needs diagnosis before further exfoliation.

Ask whether the dots are blackheads or sebaceous filaments, which active matches your acne pattern, and how to alternate it with current products. Mention eczema, rosacea, aspirin or salicylate sensitivity, pregnancy plans, breastfeeding and any medicine that already makes the skin dry.
