Acetic acid for swimmer's ear

Short answer

Acetic acid ear drops can treat some cases of swimmer's ear by restoring an acidic ear-canal environment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

This environment makes it harder for bacteria and fungi to grow. The drops are not appropriate for every painful or discharging ear, particularly when the eardrum may be damaged.

How the drops work

Swimmer's ear, or otitis externa, is inflammation or infection of the skin lining the outer ear canal. Water, scratching, cotton buds, or skin conditions can disturb that lining. Acetic acid changes the canal's acidity, helping control susceptible microbes; some prescribed preparations also include another ingredient to reduce inflammation.

Ear pain, itch, tenderness when the outer ear is moved, discharge, and muffled hearing can occur with otitis externa. An examination helps separate it from a middle-ear problem, trapped object, wax blockage, or an injured eardrum.

Using ear drops safely

Use the exact product and course recommended by your clinician or pharmacist. Warm the closed bottle in your hands, lie with the affected ear facing upward, place the directed amount into the canal without touching the dropper tip, and remain in position briefly so the liquid can spread.

Keep the ear dry while it heals and avoid swimming, cotton buds, fingers, ear candles, and attempts to scrape the canal. Do not put acetic acid drops into an ear with a known or suspected perforated eardrum, a ventilation tube, recent ear surgery, or unexplained bleeding or discharge unless an ear clinician has specifically advised it.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe or increasing pain, fever, spreading redness or swelling around the ear, pus or blood, new hearing loss, dizziness, or symptoms that do not begin to improve with treatment. Seek urgent care if swelling extends behind the ear, the face becomes weak, or you feel seriously unwell.

People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or previous ear surgery should obtain clinical advice early because an outer-ear infection can require closer examination and different treatment. Stop the drops and seek advice if they cause marked burning, rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Questions for your clinician

Confirm whether the eardrum is intact, whether the canal needs professional cleaning, and how to keep water out during recovery. Mention ear tubes, surgery, diabetes, immune problems, skin disease, allergies to ear products, current discharge, and any change in hearing or balance.

Questions people ask

Can I use household vinegar instead of acetic acid ear drops?

Do not substitute a household product for a medicinal preparation. Its concentration, cleanliness, and added ingredients may be unsuitable, especially if the eardrum is damaged.

Is brief stinging after acetic acid drops expected?

Mild brief stinging can occur in an inflamed canal. Stop using the drops and get advice if burning is strong, persistent, or accompanied by rash, swelling, dizziness, or breathing trouble.

Why might a clinician clean the ear canal?

Swelling, discharge, or debris can prevent drops from reaching the canal skin. A clinician can clear an obstruction safely and may place a wick when the canal is very swollen.
