What should you know about acetic acid for warts?

Household vinegar and medical acid preparations are not interchangeable. A clinician should first confirm that the growth is a wart, because corns, calluses, skin tags and some skin cancers can look similar.

Acetic acid is the acid associated with vinegar, but products differ greatly in formulation and intended use. Applying an improvised or concentrated preparation may damage the wart and the surrounding normal skin without reliably clearing the infected tissue.

Warts are skin growths caused by human papillomavirus. Their location, thickness and the person's health affect which treatment is suitable. Skin on the face, genitals, around nails and on pressure-bearing feet needs particular care because injury in these areas can have greater consequences.

Do not cut, scrape or soak a suspected wart in an unlabelled acid. If a product was prescribed, follow its label and protect nearby skin exactly as directed. Wash your hands after touching the area, avoid sharing razors or nail tools, and keep treatment applicators away from unaffected skin.

A dermatologist can discuss established options based on the site and type of wart. These may include freezing, clinician-directed medicines, electrosurgery or another wart-removal method. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or reduced immunity should seek clinical advice before attempting treatment.

After acid exposure, rinse the skin promptly with plenty of running water and remove contaminated clothing. Seek urgent medical advice for severe pain, blistering, whitening or darkening skin, an eye exposure, a large affected area, or acid swallowed by mistake.

Arrange a skin assessment if the growth bleeds without being picked, changes colour or shape, becomes persistently painful, spreads quickly, sits on the face or genitals, or remains uncertain in appearance. Stop any wart product if inflammation extends beyond the treated spot.

Ask whether the lesion is definitely a wart, which treatment fits its location, how surrounding skin should be protected, and what reaction should prompt you to stop. Also mention pregnancy, medicines that affect immunity, diabetes, circulation problems, numbness and any previous chemical reaction.
