It is also called paracetamol. It can reduce pain and fever but does not treat the infection, inflammation or other condition causing the aches.

Body aches can accompany viral illnesses, physical exertion and many other problems. Influenza commonly presents with abrupt fever, fatigue and widespread aches, while fibromyalgia presents with persistent widespread pain alongside features such as unrefreshing sleep. Pain relief does not identify which cause is present.

Acetaminophen changes how the body processes pain and temperature signals. It has little anti-inflammatory effect, so it may ease soreness without reducing swelling. The response should be judged by comfort and ability to rest, not used to delay assessment of worsening symptoms.

Follow the dose and interval on your product or prescription, using the measuring device supplied with liquid medicine. Check every cold, flu, headache and combination pain product for acetaminophen or paracetamol; taking more than one containing the same ingredient can cause an accidental overdose.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician before use if you have liver disease, regularly drink alcohol, are underweight, are pregnant, or take medicines that may interact. Doses differ for children and are often based on the child's weight and product strength, so do not estimate from an adult dose. Rest, drink fluids as appropriate and track associated symptoms.

Get urgent help for severe weakness, confusion, a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, a spreading purple rash, very dark urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever with aches after travel to a malaria or dengue risk area requires prompt assessment; tell the clinician where and when you travelled. Persistent, unexplained or progressively worsening pain should also be reviewed.

If you took more acetaminophen than directed, seek urgent poison or emergency advice immediately, even if you feel well. Early overdose may cause few obvious symptoms while liver injury is developing. Bring the packet and details of all combination products taken.

Confirm which dose matches your age, weight, liver health and exact product strength. Ask how long self-care is reasonable, whether another medicine is compatible with your current treatment, and which changes in fever, rash, weakness, urine or breathing would require reassessment.
