Acanthosis Nigricans Under the Eyes

Acanthosis nigricans has a velvety, thickened texture and more often affects skin folds. Under-eye colour can instead reflect natural pigmentation, shadowing, rubbing, eczema or irritation. A clinician can compare the eye area with the neck, armpits and other folds before deciding what the change represents.

True acanthosis nigricans around the eyes may occur with similar velvety darkening elsewhere. Its presence can prompt a review for factors such as insulin resistance, hormonal concerns or medicines that affect skin growth. It does not follow that every person with under-eye pigmentation has one of these problems.

Texture, symmetry, itch and the speed of change help separate possible causes. Fine scaling or itch may point toward dermatitis, while a hollow tear trough can create a shadow without a pigment disorder. Photographs taken in the same lighting can help show whether the area is genuinely changing.

Start with bland moisturiser, sun protection suitable for the face and less rubbing. Stop any new cosmetic that causes stinging, scaling or swelling. If acanthosis nigricans is confirmed, the first plan addresses any associated health or medicine trigger. A dermatologist may then consider a carefully chosen topical product or procedure for residual pigmentation. Chemical peels and laser toning require particular caution around the eyes, including appropriate eye protection and assessment of pigment-change risk.

Arrange a routine review for persistent or increasing colour, especially when matching thickened patches appear on the neck or in other folds. Seek urgent medical care for eye pain, reduced vision, marked eyelid swelling, blistering, or a rapidly worsening reaction after a product or procedure.

Sudden widespread velvety darkening, involvement inside the mouth, or unexplained symptoms elsewhere also warrants prompt assessment rather than cosmetic treatment alone.
