The patches are often thicker and more velvety than surrounding skin, commonly appearing in folds such as the neck, armpits or groin. A clinician may review medicines, weight changes and signs of a metabolic or hormonal issue before recommending treatment.

Acanthosis nigricans is a skin change rather than a stain that can simply be scrubbed away. It can occur when signals affecting skin-cell growth are altered, including with insulin resistance, some hormonal conditions or certain medicines. Friction may make affected folds more noticeable, but poor hygiene is not the explanation.

Improvement in the trigger may gradually soften or lighten the skin. The visible change can persist even when the underlying issue is being managed, so progress should be judged by both health findings and the skin's texture rather than colour alone.

Arrange an assessment if the diagnosis has not been confirmed. Depending on the history and examination, a clinician may consider glucose-related or hormonal evaluation and review prescription medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing a safe alternative.

Use gentle cleansing and reduce rubbing from tight collars or repeated scrubbing. For persistent texture or pigmentation, a dermatologist may discuss topical retinoids, carefully selected chemical peels or laser-based treatment. These options can irritate skin and do not replace management of the trigger; suitability depends on the site, skin tone and current skin sensitivity.

Book a medical review when dark, thickened skin is new, spreading or unexplained, or when it appears alongside increased thirst, frequent urination, menstrual changes or other new symptoms. A prompt assessment is particularly appropriate when extensive changes develop suddenly, involve the mouth, or occur without the usual fold pattern.

Seek earlier dermatology advice if the area becomes painful, cracked, weeping or infected. These features are not the usual cosmetic texture change and may need separate treatment.
