Is Acanthosis Nigricans Dangerous?

The patches are not infectious and cannot spread to another person. Their significance depends less on the darkness of the skin and more on why they developed, how quickly they appeared, and whether other symptoms are present.

Acanthosis nigricans commonly accompanies reduced sensitivity to insulin. It may also occur with hormonal disorders, run in families, or follow certain medicines. Much less commonly, abrupt and widespread changes in an adult can accompany an internal illness, which is why the pattern and timing matter.

A diagnosis is based on the characteristic thickened, velvety appearance, often around the neck, underarms, or groin. Dark colour alone is not enough because eczema, friction, fungal conditions, and post-inflammatory pigmentation can look different but affect similar sites.

Book a non-urgent appointment for a new or unexplained patch. A clinician may review your medicines, family history, weight changes, menstrual or hormonal symptoms, and signs related to blood glucose before deciding whether tests are needed. Management focuses first on any contributor identified.

For the skin, reduce rubbing, choose a mild cleanser, and use a simple moisturiser. Prescription topical retinoids, chemical peels, or laser-based treatment may be considered for selected patients after diagnosis, but irritation can deepen pigmentation and the choice should match the skin site and tone.

Contact a clinician promptly if the change began suddenly, is spreading rapidly, involves the lips or inside the mouth, or comes with unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal symptoms, difficulty swallowing, marked thirst, or frequent urination. Urgent care is appropriate if you are acutely unwell; the skin appearance alone cannot determine the cause.
