What should you know about abortive polio?

Short answer

Abortive polio is a short, mild poliovirus illness that does not involve the brain, spinal cord or paralysis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Infection with poliovirus
Nervous system
Not involved in abortive polio
Prevention
Vaccination and careful hand hygiene

The short answer

It can resemble many common viral infections, with fever, tiredness, headache, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort. Symptoms alone cannot confirm that poliovirus is the cause.

What the term means

The word abortive describes an illness that ends without signs of infection affecting the nervous system. It is distinct from non-paralytic polio, which can cause meningitis-like symptoms such as neck stiffness, and from paralytic polio, which causes new muscle weakness or paralysis.

Poliovirus spreads mainly through contact with infected stool, often through contaminated hands, food or water. An infected person can pass on the virus even when the illness is mild, so travel history, vaccination history and possible exposure are clinically relevant.

What to do if polio is suspected

Contact a healthcare service promptly and tell them before arriving if there has been possible poliovirus exposure, recent travel to an affected area or incomplete vaccination. Advance notice allows the team to arrange assessment while limiting exposure to other patients.

Care for a mild illness focuses on fluids, rest and symptom relief chosen with a clinician or pharmacist. Wash hands carefully with soap and water after using the toilet or changing nappies, and do not prepare food for others while awaiting medical advice. Testing and public-health follow-up may be arranged because the same early symptoms can occur in different forms of poliovirus infection.

Warning signs needing urgent help

Seek emergency care for new weakness in an arm or leg, loss of muscle tone, difficulty walking, trouble swallowing, a weak cry in a child, shortness of breath or reduced alertness. These are neurological or breathing warning signs and do not fit the definition of abortive polio.

Urgent assessment is also appropriate for a severe headache with neck stiffness, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration or rapidly worsening illness. Mention the suspected exposure immediately so clinicians can use suitable infection-control precautions and arrange appropriate tests.

Useful questions for the clinician

Ask whether the symptoms and exposure history require poliovirus testing, which specimens may be collected, and how to reduce transmission at home. Confirm whether household members need their vaccination records checked and find out whom to contact if weakness, neck stiffness or breathing difficulty appears.

Questions people ask

Can abortive polio cause paralysis?

No. By definition, abortive polio resolves without nervous-system involvement or paralysis. New weakness means the illness needs urgent reassessment rather than being treated as abortive polio.

Can symptoms alone identify abortive polio?

No. Fever, sore throat, headache and stomach symptoms overlap with many infections. Clinicians use exposure and vaccination history, examination and appropriate laboratory testing to determine the cause.

Does previous vaccination information matter?

Yes. Bring any available vaccination record to the assessment. A clinician can identify missing doses and advise on vaccination for the patient and household contacts.
