What an abnormal urinalysis means

The result is interpreted with urinary symptoms, pregnancy status, medicines and the way the sample was collected. One flagged component does not identify a cause by itself, and a repeat clean-catch sample may be needed.

White blood cells, nitrites or bacteria can support concern for a urinary infection when compatible symptoms are present. Blood may come from infection, stones, kidney or bladder conditions, menstruation or recent strenuous exercise. Protein can appear temporarily with fever or exertion, while persistent protein may require kidney assessment.

Glucose or ketones can relate to how the body is handling sugar or energy. A concentrated sample may simply reflect limited fluid intake. Epithelial cells and mixed bacteria can suggest that skin or genital material entered the container, making the sample harder to interpret.

Tell the clinician about burning, urgency, frequent urination, fever, flank pain, visible blood, vaginal symptoms and whether you were menstruating during collection. A urine culture may be requested when infection is suspected because it can identify the organism and guide antibiotic choice.

If asked to repeat the test, wash your hands, follow the provided cleaning instructions, begin urinating into the toilet and collect the midstream sample without touching the inside of the container. Deliver it as instructed. Antibiotics are not appropriate for every abnormal urinalysis, so treatment depends on symptoms and confirmatory findings.

Seek urgent care for fever with pain in the back or side, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, inability to pass urine, severe lower-abdominal pain, or visible blood with clots. Prompt assessment is also warranted for urinary symptoms during pregnancy or when a person is medically vulnerable, because infection may need faster evaluation.

Ask which component was abnormal, whether collection contamination is possible and whether a culture or repeat sample is needed. If blood or protein persists, ask what kidney, bladder or urinary-tract checks will help locate the source and how soon follow-up should occur.
