What should you know about abnormal gait analysis?

Short answer

Abnormal gait analysis examines how you walk to identify movement patterns, contributing impairments, and practical targets for treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core purpose
Connect walking patterns with possible contributing impairments
Possible tools
Clinical observation, motion capture, and pressure measurement
Bring along
Usual footwear, orthotics, braces, and walking aids

The short answer

It can combine clinical observation with measurements of step pattern, joint movement, muscle control, balance, and how pressure travels through the feet. The result describes what happens during walking; it does not automatically establish one diagnosis.

What the assessment can reveal

The clinician may look for unequal step length, reduced foot clearance, trunk leaning, limited joint motion, altered foot loading, or difficulty controlling one leg. Strength, sensation, joint range, footwear, pain, and balance are then checked to interpret why the pattern may be occurring.

Instrumented systems can add detail. Motion capture tracks body segments, while a pressure plate maps timing and load beneath the feet. Measurements are interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination because a visible difference can be an adaptation rather than the original problem.

Preparing and using the results

Bring the shoes and any brace, walking aid, or orthotic you normally use. Wear clothing that allows the clinician to see leg and trunk movement. Explain when the gait change began, whether it varies with fatigue or pain, and whether you have fallen or nearly fallen.

Findings may guide strengthening, mobility work, balance training, walking practice, footwear changes, an assistive device, or an orthotic assessment. A useful plan links each recommendation to a measured problem and includes a way to reassess function after treatment.

When a gait change is urgent

A gradual or persistent walking change deserves clinical assessment, particularly when it causes pain, repeated tripping, falls, or reduced independence. Seek urgent medical help for a sudden gait change accompanied by facial droop, speech difficulty, new one-sided weakness or numbness, severe dizziness, confusion, or a sudden intense headache.

Urgent evaluation is also appropriate after significant injury when you cannot bear weight, or when new loss of bladder or bowel control occurs with leg weakness or numbness around the groin.

Questions that make the report useful

Ask which finding most affects safety or efficiency, what may be causing it, whether further neurological or musculoskeletal assessment is needed, and which outcome will be measured to judge whether treatment is helping.

Questions people ask

Is gait analysis painful?

The measurements themselves are generally non-invasive, but walking may reproduce an existing symptom. Tell the clinician so the task can be adapted safely.

Does an abnormal result mean I need orthotics?

No. Orthotics are one possible option. The appropriate response depends on symptoms, examination findings, goals, footwear, and the reason for the gait pattern.
