What an abnormal electrocardiogram means

An ECG, also called an EKG, records the timing and pathway of electrical activity through the heart. The significance of a flagged pattern depends on symptoms, previous tracings, medicines, medical history, and whether the recording is technically clear.

The tracing may show a fast, slow, or irregular rhythm; delayed electrical conduction; or changes that suggest strain or reduced blood flow. Atrial fibrillation typically presents with an irregular rhythm on ECG and may cause palpitations, breathlessness, tiredness, or dizziness.

Movement, poor electrode contact, body position, and normal individual variation can also trigger an automated abnormal label. A clinician reviews the waves and intervals rather than accepting the machine interpretation alone.

Discuss the tracing with the clinician who ordered it. Depending on the pattern and your symptoms, they may repeat the ECG, compare an older recording, check blood pressure and blood tests, arrange longer rhythm monitoring, or request heart imaging.

Write down episodes of chest discomfort, palpitations, faintness, breathlessness, and what you were doing at the time. Bring an up-to-date medicine and supplement list because some products can affect heart rate, rhythm, or electrolyte balance.

Call emergency services for pressure or pain in the chest that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by sweating, nausea, breathlessness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Collapse, fainting with ongoing symptoms, or severe difficulty breathing also needs emergency care.

Seek urgent assessment for a sustained racing or very irregular heartbeat with dizziness, weakness, or breathlessness. The need for rapid care comes from the symptoms and current condition, even if the ECG report has not yet been explained.

Ask whether the abnormality involves rhythm, rate, conduction, or another feature; whether an earlier ECG looks similar; and whether medicines might contribute. Find out what further monitoring is intended to answer and which symptoms should change the follow-up plan.
