What does an abdominal ultrasound show?

Commonly viewed structures include the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and abdominal aorta. The exact coverage follows the clinical question written on the referral.

The scan can reveal changes in organ size or texture, gallstones, some kidney stones, widening of bile ducts, kidney swelling, bladder retention, free fluid, or enlargement of the aorta. Doppler ultrasound may also assess the direction and pattern of blood flow when relevant.

Ultrasound has limits. Gas and body tissues can obscure deeper areas, the stomach and bowel are not fully assessed, and a visible abnormality does not by itself establish its cause. The written report needs to be considered with symptoms, examination findings, and any laboratory results.

Use the preparation directions supplied with the booking; they may include avoiding food or filling the bladder. Bring information about earlier scans if requested, and tell the sonographer where symptoms occur and whether a particular movement makes them worse.

Arrange follow-up with the clinician who ordered the examination. Ask how well the target organs were seen, whether the finding matches the reason for referral, and whether observation, laboratory tests, repeat imaging, or a different type of scan is the logical next step.

Urgent assessment is warranted for sudden severe abdominal or back pain, fainting, a hard or rapidly enlarging abdomen, persistent vomiting, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, new confusion, or abdominal pain with fever, yellow skin or eyes, breathlessness, or marked weakness. A routine imaging booking is not a substitute for emergency care.

Ask which structures were normal, which finding needs attention, and whether any area could not be seen clearly. Clarify whether the report offers a definite explanation or a list of possibilities, how it changes treatment, and what follow-up is advised if symptoms continue or evolve.
