Abdominal intertrigo: care for a skin-fold rash

How the structures involved in Intertrigo differ from normal

Short answer

Abdominal intertrigo is inflammation within a skin fold, commonly driven by trapped moisture, heat and repeated rubbing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main triggers
Moisture, warmth and friction
Common sensations
Soreness, itching or burning
Basic care
Gentle cleansing, thorough drying and reduced rubbing

The short answer

The fold may look red or darker than the surrounding skin and can feel sore, itchy, moist or raw. Yeast or bacteria may grow in damaged, damp skin, but not every intertrigo rash is infected.

How irritation develops in the fold

Skin resting against skin holds sweat and reduces evaporation. Movement then creates friction, weakening the surface barrier. Hot weather, tight clothing, heavy sweating and limited airflow can worsen the cycle. A yeast-associated rash may have small nearby spots, while bacterial infection may produce increasing tenderness, odour, discharge or crusting.

Other problems, including contact dermatitis and inflammatory skin disease, can resemble intertrigo. Location alone cannot identify the cause, so persistent or recurrent symptoms may need examination and sometimes a swab or skin sample.

Reduce moisture and protect the barrier

Wash gently, rinse away cleanser and pat the fold completely dry rather than rubbing. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. A clean, soft fabric placed loosely between touching surfaces can reduce friction, provided it is replaced when moist.

Avoid fragranced products and using several medicated creams at once. Antifungal treatment helps when yeast is involved; it will not treat every cause. A clinician can decide whether an antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory or sweat-reducing approach fits the appearance and history.

When the rash needs medical care

Book an appointment if the rash is worsening, keeps returning, cracks or drains, has a strong odour, or does not settle with gentle moisture control. Prompt assessment is appropriate for spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever or increasing pain. People with reduced immunity or poorly healing skin should seek advice early because infection can progress more readily.

What to clarify with your clinician

Ask whether the pattern looks irritant, fungal, bacterial or inflammatory; where each prescribed product should be applied; and how long to continue it. Discuss excessive sweating, recent antibiotics, new toiletries and previous episodes, since these details can change the prevention plan.

Questions people ask

Is abdominal intertrigo contagious?

Intertrigo itself is an inflammatory reaction and is not contagious. A clinician can check whether an organism is also present and advise suitable hygiene and treatment.

Should I put powder in the abdominal fold?

Some powders can cake when wet or irritate broken skin. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which moisture-control product is suitable, and do not combine powders with creams unless instructed.
