What should you know about ab vacuum diastasis recti?

Short answer
An abdominal vacuum can train gentle deep-core control, but it does not diagnose diastasis recti or reliably close the separation by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it trains
- Awareness and control of the abdominal wall during breathing
- What it cannot do
- Confirm the diagnosis or serve as a complete rehabilitation plan
- Stop if
- You develop pain, dizziness, bearing down, or worsening pelvic symptoms
The short answer
The exercise involves drawing the abdominal wall inward, often after an exhale. Whether it is useful depends on breathing, pressure management, symptoms, and how the movement carries over to lifting and everyday tasks.
How the exercise relates to diastasis recti
Diastasis recti involves the connective tissue at the abdominal midline, not simply a weak muscle that needs to be pulled inward. A vacuum may help someone sense lower-abdominal engagement, yet appearance during one exercise does not show how well the trunk manages pressure during coughing, carrying, or rising.
Forceful hollowing can also encourage breath-holding or excessive tension. Those patterns may be unhelpful if they produce dizziness, pain, midline doming, downward pelvic pressure, or urine leakage. Treatment should respond to function and symptoms rather than chase a completely flat abdomen.
How to approach it safely
Begin in a supported position and breathe without straining. After a relaxed exhale, gently narrow the lower abdomen while keeping the ribs, jaw, and pelvic floor comfortable; then release and breathe normally. Stop if you feel light-headed, painful, or unable to avoid bearing down.
Do not treat stronger suction or a longer hold as proof of better recovery. If the movement is comfortable, a physiotherapist may integrate it with coordinated breathing, progressive resistance, balance, and task-specific lifting. Modify any exercise that causes uncontrolled ridging or worsens pelvic symptoms.
When professional help is useful
Book an assessment if you are unsure how to breathe during the exercise, cannot control bulging, or develop persistent back pain, pelvic heaviness, leakage, or difficulty with normal activity. Seek urgent care for severe or escalating abdominal pain, vomiting, fainting, or a hard tender bulge that will not reduce. Do not attempt to pull such a bulge inward with a vacuum exercise.
What to ask at an assessment
You might ask whether abdominal hollowing suits your breathing and pelvic-floor pattern, how much effort to use, and which functional exercises should accompany it. Also ask how progress will be measured beyond gap width and whether a suspected hernia, recent birth, surgery, pain, or prolapse symptoms change the plan.

Questions people ask
Can ab vacuums close diastasis recti?
They may contribute to abdominal control for some people, but no single exercise can promise closure. Recovery plans commonly address breathing, pressure, progressive strength, and the demands of daily life.
Should I hold my breath during an abdominal vacuum?
Avoid prolonged or forceful breath-holding. Use a gentle exhale and remain able to release the contraction and return to comfortable breathing without dizziness or strain.
Why does my abdomen dome during the exercise?
Doming can appear when pressure exceeds the abdominal wall's current control or when the technique does not suit you. Reduce the effort, change position, and seek assessment if it persists.
