If surgery is proposed, request a personalised graft plan, an explanation of extraction and placement, and a realistic discussion of density. Confirm who performs each part of the procedure and how the team manages ongoing loss, wound care and follow-up.

See a dermatologist before arranging surgery if loss is rapid, patchy, painful or accompanied by redness, heavy scale, pustules or shiny scar-like skin. After a procedure, escalating pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, persistent bleeding or sudden marked swelling warrants prompt contact with the treating clinic or urgent medical care.

Ask for the precise diagnosis, whether loss is still active, how donor reserves were assessed and what the hairline may look like as surrounding hair changes. Also ask about scars, temporary shedding, altered sensation, uneven growth, infection precautions and the plan if growth is less dense than hoped.
