Hypertension: measurement, treatment and warning signs

Short answer
Hypertension means persistently raised blood pressure, often without symptoms, and requires reliable measurement and ongoing management.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Symptoms
- Often absent
- Confirmation
- Repeated, properly taken readings
- Care pattern
- Long-term lifestyle measures, monitoring and medicines when prescribed
What the diagnosis means
One unusual reading does not always establish the diagnosis because pain, stress, activity and measurement technique can temporarily affect the result. Repeated clinic readings or measurements taken outside the clinic help show the underlying pattern.
Why sustained pressure matters
Blood pressure reflects the force of blood against artery walls. When it remains high, the heart and blood vessels work under added strain, which can contribute to stroke, heart disease, kidney damage and eye problems over time. Lack of headache or dizziness does not show that pressure is normal.
Assessment can include checking both arms, reviewing medicines and family history, and looking for conditions that influence pressure, such as kidney disease or obstructive sleep apnoea. Blood and urine tests may identify organ effects or factors that guide treatment.
Building a workable control plan
Take prescribed medicine consistently, even when you feel well, and do not double a missed dose unless specifically instructed. Keep a home record if your clinician recommends it: sit quietly, support your back and arm, place the correct-sized cuff on bare skin and avoid talking during the reading.
Reducing excess salt, eating a varied diet rich in vegetables, staying active, addressing excess weight, limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco can support blood-pressure control. Review over-the-counter decongestants, anti-inflammatory pain medicines and supplements with a clinician or pharmacist because some can raise pressure or interfere with treatment.
When high readings become urgent
Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, facial droop, difficulty speaking, new confusion, loss of vision, fainting or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms need emergency assessment regardless of the home blood-pressure value.
If a reading is much higher than your agreed range but you feel well, rest quietly, repeat it using correct technique and contact a healthcare professional promptly for instructions. Arrange a routine review when readings trend upward, side effects occur or doses are frequently missed.
Questions that shape treatment
Ask what range you should aim for, when and how often to measure at home, whether your cuff is suitable, and what to do after a high result. Confirm possible medicine side effects, monitoring tests and how other health conditions affect the plan.

Questions people ask
Can I stop blood-pressure medicine when readings improve?
Not without clinical advice. Improved readings may show that treatment is working, and stopping suddenly can allow pressure to rise or cause problems with certain medicines.
Why are my home and clinic readings different?
Stress, recent activity, cuff size, posture and timing can change a measurement. A structured record lets your clinician compare patterns rather than rely on an isolated value.
