What Is Swelling on the Skin Called?

Short answer
Swelling on or beneath the skin may be called swelling, oedema, or puffiness; a clinician uses more specific terms after identifying its pattern and cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- General term
- Swelling or oedema
- Deeper pattern
- Angioedema may affect the eyelids, lips, tongue, or other tissues
- Emergency clue
- Any breathing or swallowing difficulty with swelling
How clinicians describe swelling
Oedema describes fluid collecting in tissues. A raised, itchy welt may be called a wheal and can occur with hives. Angioedema is deeper swelling, often affecting areas such as the eyelids or lips. Cellulitis can present with an expanding area of swollen, warm, red, and tender skin. These labels describe different patterns and should not be treated as interchangeable diagnoses.
A clinician considers where the swelling began, how quickly it appeared, whether pressing leaves an indentation, and whether itch, pain, redness, warmth, rash, injury, or fever is present. Swelling limited to one site suggests a different range of causes from widespread puffiness or swelling in both legs.
Safe first steps
Remove tight jewellery or clothing from the affected area before swelling increases. If there was a minor knock or bite and the skin is intact, rest the area and apply a wrapped cool compress for comfort. Avoid scratching, vigorous massage, and applying an unfamiliar remedy to broken or inflamed skin.
Record when the swelling started and any new foods, medicines, skin products, bites, injuries, or illnesses that preceded it. A photograph can help show progression. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without clinical guidance, but tell the prescriber promptly if swelling followed a new dose.
Warning signs that need care
Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, breathing or swallowing difficulty, a hoarse voice, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Do not wait for a rash to appear, because a serious reaction can occur without obvious hives.
Obtain prompt medical assessment for hot, painful, or rapidly spreading swelling; fever; pus; red streaks; swelling around an eye; or severe swelling after an injury. A new swollen leg with chest pain or shortness of breath also needs urgent assessment. Persistent, recurrent, unexplained, or widespread swelling deserves a routine clinical review even when it is not painful.
What to discuss at your visit
Ask whether the pattern looks like surface inflammation, deeper tissue swelling, infection, allergy, injury, or fluid retention. Clarify whether any medicine or skin product could contribute, which symptoms should trigger urgent care, and whether examination elsewhere on the body or further testing is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Are oedema and angioedema the same thing?
Not exactly. Oedema is a broad term for fluid-related tissue swelling, while angioedema describes a deeper swelling pattern that can have allergic and non-allergic causes.
Can skin swelling occur without redness?
Yes. Colour depends on the cause and skin tone, so swelling may appear without obvious redness. Warmth, pain, itch, location, and speed of onset remain useful clues.
Should I massage a swollen area?
Avoid forceful massage until the cause is clear, particularly after injury or when the area is painful, hot, rapidly enlarging, or affecting one leg.
