A Small Bump on the Skin: What to Know

A bump can arise from a blocked pore, an irritated hair follicle, trapped keratin, heat, inflammation, an insect bite, or a local reaction. Folliculitis often produces bumps centred on hairs and may feel tender or itchy. Milia appear as firm, pale bumps, while keratosis pilaris commonly creates rough clusters on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. Appearance alone may not identify the cause reliably.

Notice whether the bump is new or longstanding, single or grouped, smooth or rough, and whether it contains fluid or pus. Itching, pain, warmth, crusting, bleeding, colour change, and rapid growth give a clinician useful clues. Avoid assuming that one feature confirms a particular condition.

Leave the bump intact rather than squeezing, cutting, or trying to drain it. Wash gently, reduce friction from tight clothing or shaving, and use a cool compress if the area is mildly itchy or irritated. Take a clear photograph and note any change in size, surface, colour, or symptoms.

Treatment depends on the cause. A clinician may suggest skin care, a medicine for inflammation or infection, or a procedure for a suitable lesion. Do not apply a strong acid, freezing product, or prescription cream to an unidentified bump, especially near the eyes or on sensitive skin.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bump persists, repeatedly returns, grows, changes colour or shape, bleeds without a clear injury, forms a non-healing sore, or causes ongoing pain or itch. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, marked tenderness, red streaks, or fever because these can accompany infection.

Get urgent help if a sudden outbreak occurs with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread blistering. These symptoms require rapid assessment regardless of what the bumps look like.

Ask what features support the likely diagnosis, whether the bump needs testing or observation, which products to avoid, and what specific change should bring you back. Mention recent shaving, new cosmetics, medicines, travel, insect exposure, and similar bumps in close contacts when relevant.
